TPWM Residency: Juneau Projects - Blackbird in Infospace

Blackbird in Infospace is the outcome of Juneau Projects’ three month period of research in Worcester.

One of five Turning Point West Midlands funded artist residencies taking place across the region in 2013, the project has been produced by Fine Art at the University of Worcester, in partnership with Movement Gallery and Worcester City Art Gallery.

The exhibition launches on Thursday 23 May with a performance at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and after at Movement Gallery.

ARC Symposium: the artist behind the city

On Friday 17 May 2013 - A day of discussion and discovery in Coventry with guests including Lee Simmons, Jacques Nimki and Peter Kennard.

Join Coventry Artspace and the artists that they've been working with over the past year with their ARC programme for an artist-led discussion about the future of art making with people in the city, a tour of spaces for art in Coventry and an after party in the city's public square at a specially commissioned bar. Artspace will also launch an art map of the city, created especially for this event.

Artist Development projects 2013-14 update

Turning Point West Midlands supports creative and professional development for artists. It does this by working together with The New Art Gallery Walsall and regional artist-led spaces, groups and other partners. Together we are creating artist development opportunities across the West Midlands.

2013-14 will be another busy year with many new opportunities. To keep you up to date here is an outline of the projects we will be working on:

STUDIO VISITS

In Autumn 2012 and Spring 2013 curators, gallerists and established artists undertook visits to artists’ studios in the West Midlands following an application process. Further studio visits are planned for Autumn 2013. More information on studio visits can be found here.

ART FAIR RESEARCH TRIPS

A delegation of artists from across the West Midlands will be selected by artist-led spaces and visual art hubs in their areas to undertake a funded research trip to Frieze Art Fair in October 2013.

BUSINESS TRAINING

Visual arts specialists will be invited to visit areas across the region to provide guidance in the business of being an artist. These sessions will be developed in association with the regional artist-led spaces with a view to supporting further peer-to-peer learning and collaboration. MICRO-RESIDENCIES

Following successful residencies at The New Art Gallery Walsall and Wolverhampton Art Gallery, two further micro-residencies are planned with mac Birmingham and the New Art Gallery Walsall. These residencies are designed to be short, developmental periods of activity for artists within the West Midlands. These micro-residencies will also be offered by application, more details will follow.

EVENTS

A series of events are planned including an Artists’ Study Day to coincide with New Art West Midlands 2014 and an event looking into developing a curatorial practice.

Developing art projects for beyond the gallery space

The New Art Gallery Walsall

This event will be chaired by Deborah Robinson, Head of Exhibitions at The New Art Gallery Walsall. The speakers are:

Anne de Charmant - Anne is Director and Curator of Meadow Arts in Shropshire. Anne’s team specialise in developing contemporary art projects for heritage sites such as stately homes, castles and gardens.

Nina Coulson - Nina is half of the artist duo Yoke & Zoom and has also set up Movement Gallery on Foregate St Railway Station in Worcester.

Deborah Kermode - Deborah is Deputy Director at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. She will speak about the gallery’s offsite programme.

The event should be of particular interest to artists who are keen to explore opportunities for presenting work outside of traditional gallery spaces. We will explore inspirational projects but will also consider the kinds of issues and practicalities integral to working beyond the gallery.

Worcester Open 2013: Call for artists

The Worcester Open is open to all national and international artists 18+.

All work must be original, and completed since 2010. Selectors include Wendy Law, Director of Turning Point West Midlands, Anne De Charmant (Director at Meadow Arts), Juneau Projects (Artists), Nada Prlja (Artist) and Gavin Wade (Artist, Curator and Director at Eastside Projects)

Entry fee applies. Deadline Tuesday 11 June 2013.

Of All The People In All The World

Of All The People In All The World, Birmingham-based Stan's Cafe's award-winning exhibition has returned home for a landmark tenth year after touring 50 cities around the world. The show at the newly opened Two Snowhill offices in Birmingham uses grains of rice to bring formally abstract statistics to startling and powerful life.

The rice grains and mounds tell stories from all over the world. Each grain of rice = one person and you are invited to compare the one grain that is you to the millions that are not. Over a period of days a team of performers carefully weigh out quantities of rice to represent a host of human statistics. The show adapts to each city and current news.

Of All The People In All The World is open until Sunday 21 April and is a must see. It is open from 11am – 7pm on weekdays and 11am – 6pm at the weekend.
